Beeswax Candles
A discussion on beeswax candles is needed in order to complete the three main wax types used in candle making.
How Beeswax is Made:
Beeswax is an all natural wax made by honey bees. The bees will typically need to consume about ten pounds of honey in order to make one pound of wax.
After gorging themselves with honey, the bees will huddle together in order to generate heat. Then, the wax will "sweat" out of the underside of the abdomen in the form of small scales.
This wax is then collected by the beekeepers, filtered and then sold.
Why Beeswax Candles?
Beeswax candles are the most natural candles you can buy. If you have really sensitive allergies, these may be the only candles you can burn.
Beeswax is naturally scented with the smell of honey, so typically no scent is added at all. In fact, most of these candles have no artificial scents, colors, or additives. This is great if you like the smell of honey or have allergies.
Just like soy, beeswax candles will burn much cleaner and longer than paraffin candles. The downside is that it costs much more than paraffin and even more than soy.
More Beeswax Information:
The wax varies in color from almost white to a light brown. Sometimes bleach is added during the filtering process to achieve a consistent color. An unfiltered wax can sometimes contain wood parts or even parts of bees.
Over time, beeswax will naturally go through a process called blooming. This produces a whitish powder on the outside of the wax. This bloom can easily be wiped off, and is a good indicator that your wax is pure.
Beeswax candles are the easiest candles to make at home. No scent, dye, or additives are needed and the wax is sold in sheets for convenience.
You can simply lay the wick in the wax sheet and roll it up and that’s just about all there is to it. Beeswax also comes in brick form if you prefer to make solid candles. If you decide on this method, you will need a mold release because the wax will stick to the mold.
If you do not want the hassle of making them yourself and are looking for a great place to buy beeswax candles this is the site I would recommend.
Sit back, relax, and light a beeswax candle!
