Candle Safety

To ensure candle safety, please use caution by following these simple tips.

Another House Fire, Due to Candles

Don't let this be the headline in your local paper. With a little thought, care, and respect, candles can be burned all throughout the year safely and enjoyably.

Tip #1 Never Leave Unattended

Things happen. Who knows how. The absolute best defense for preventing a fire is simply being nearby. If you're going to be gone, blow the candle out! Fire is to be respected. Just remember that burning candles safely is about prudence.

Tip #2 Never Place Near Combustibles

Candle safety experts claim that by far the most common place for fires to start is in the bedroom. Many people enjoy the aroma in these special places. Bed spreads and curtains can easily catch fire if too close to a candle. If you burn candles in the bedroom, be extra careful to place far away from combustibles.

Tip #3 Place Out of Reach to Children and Pets

It may seem obvious to keep out of reach of children, but sometimes we forget about our pets. This is usually fairly easy to accomplish in any room.

Tip #4 Extinguish Before Gone

Extinguish a jar candle when it reaches about a half inch from the bottom. Otherwise the bottom of the jar will get extremely hot and could possible break and/or start a fire.

Tip #5 Keep Candle Clean

Remove wick trimmings and any other foreign particles out of the puddle of wax. These things can possibly cause the candle to pop sparks out of the jar.

Tip #6 Trim the Wick

Not only does this help your candle burn cleaner and longer, it reduces the chances of the flame becoming too large and also popping.

Tip #7 Stable Surface

Make sure the surface you place the candle on is heat resistant and very stable. This is one of the most important aspects of candle safety.

Tip #8 Specialty Candles

Be particularly careful with candles that have objects other than wax in them. Especially glitter. Glitter can cause sparks that pop out of the jar and set items on fire.

Tip #9 Check Site Before Buying

You might try checking the candle safety site before you buy candles online to see if the site is listed in their index.

Practice candle safety and you should never need to worry.

Sit back, relax, light a candle, and be safe!
